Music Alive Festival Results for Markville Music

The Markville Music Department participated in the Music Alive Festival again this year. Our ensembles performed extremely well, and came away with some great results:

Performance Tour to Walt Disney World Performing Arts


April 26, 2019

Congratulations to the 72 students from the Markville Senior Strings, Markville Senior Wind Ensemble, and Markville Choral Ensemble who participated in a performance tour at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Their workshops and performances were outstanding. Markville was certainly well represented by the Music Programme, and our students benefited from feeling like a professional Disney musician both in the workshop and the performance at Downtown Disney.

Special thank you to Mr. Hu-A-Kam whose efforts and hard work to make this trip happen did not go unnoticed. His dedication and commitment to giving Markville Music students this exceptional opportunity was much appreciated. Thank you as well to the trip chaperones Mr. Sinclair, Mr. Stokes, Mr. Sinclair, Ms. Nicholson, Ms. Kaczor, Ms. Sirju and Ms. McAlpine for their time and energy as well. Lastly, thank you to all the students who participated in this amazing experience. You made us proud with your musicality and energy throughout this trip. Congratulations on a great performance tour.

Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto Results

Markville Music had a great showing at the Kiwanis Music Festival this year. The results are:

Concert Band - 3rd Place, Gold Rating - 91
Concert String Orchestra - 1st Place, Platinum Rating - 93
Symphonic String Orchestra - 1st Place, Platinum Rating - 93
Senior String Ensemble - 1st Place, Platinum Rating, Best of Class

Symphonic Band 'A Class' - 2nd Place, Platinum Rating - 94
Symphonic Band 'March Class' - 1st Place, Platinum Rating - 93
Senior Wind Ensemble - 1st Place, Platinum Rating - 95

We were also informed the Kiwanis Music Festival that the wind and string divisions won overall scholarships for their outstanding performances:

Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation Scholarship - Wind Programme
Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation Scholarship - String Programme

The Grade 10 Symphonic Orchestra also was nominated to compete in the OMFA (Ontario Music Festivals Association) Provincial Championships. Congratulations to all the Markville Music ensembles on their exceptional performances.

Ontario Band Association Results for Markville Music

February 15, 2019

The Markville Music Department participated in the Ontario Band Association's Concert Band Festival again this year. All three wind ensembles performed extremely well, and came home with some great results:

Concert Band - Gold Award, Woodwind Excellence Award
Symphonic Band - Gold Award, Overall Outstanding Performance
Senior Wind Ensemble - Gold Award, Overall Outstanding Performance

All three ensembles also received an invitation to perform at the National Finals. Congratulations to Mr. Stokes, Mr. Langdale, and all the Markville Music students on this incredible showing.


Tuck Everlasting

January 14, 2019

On January 11th and 12th the Markville Musical Theatre programme performed Tuck Everlasting at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. The show was a complete success and was well received by all audiences. One of the more visually beautiful shows, and certainly one of the most touching stories.

Congratulations to the cast and crew on such an amazing performance. Thank you especially to Mr. Stokes and Mr. Sinclair for their hard work on this incredible project.


Into the Woods is a great success in Richmond Hill

Congratulations to all the musical theatre students and staff on an amazing show. Into the Woods was staged at Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts on January 12th and 13th to packed and appreciative audiences. The show was a big project, but with big rewards, and will go down as one of the most impressive titles Markville has produced, and one of the most visually stunning shows we've staged.

Special thank you to Mr. Sinclair and Mr. Stokes for all their time and energy in preparing this wonderful production for our school and our community.


OMFA Results for Concert Strings and Symphonic Band

Yesterday, we received some very exciting news from the Ontario Music Festivals Association. Back in February, Markville Music participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto. From that festival, two of our ensembles were nominated to participate in the Provincial Championships known as OMFA – The Grade 9 Concert String Orchestra, and The Grade 10 Symphonic Band. The results are in:

The Grade 9 Concert String Orchestra received an Honourable Mention for their participation in Class 3 for Orchestras. Congratulations Mr. Hu-A-Kam and the Grade 9 String Ensemble.

The Grade 10 Symphonic Band competed in Class 2 for Bands and received a First Place in their class, and were also awarded a performance scholarship for their submission. Congratulations Mr. Stokes and the Grade 10 Symphonic Band on winning provincials again this year.

Symphonic Band wins the OMFA Provincial Finals - Taped Class 2

The Grade Ten Symphonic Band under the direction of Mr. Stokes recently received some exciting news. In February, the band was selected by the Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto to compete as one of their representatives in the OMFA Provincial Competition.

The Symphonic Band submitted two performances from their festival recordings at Kiwanis and Music Alive. They were adjudicated in the “Taped Grade 10 and Under—Concert Band” category alongside other bands from across the province.

We’re pleased to announce that the Symphonic Band won their category with a First Place with an incredible mark of 96 and a performance scholarship. Congratulations to the 43 dedicated and talented students in this year’s Symphonic Band. What an amazing accomplishment.

Elena Baker wins Flute Player of the Year from MusicFest Canada

September 17, 2013

Principal flutist for our Markville Senior Wind Ensemble, Elena Baker, was awarded the Canadian Pearl Outstanding Flute Player of the Year from MusicFest Canada. She was recognized for her superb talent through her work as a soloist and ensemble member in bands across the province. She has played in some of the most competitive and prestigious wind ensembles in the country such as the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra and the Ontario Provincial Honour Band.

Her dedication to her craft is inspiring. We are certainly very proud of her and all her accomplishments both in and out of school. Congratulations Elena on this very special honour.
