Mummification - Interesting Facts and Pictures



  • The canopic jars originally held the organs but after a while they changed the ritual and returned the dried organs to the body but solid jars were still placed with the body.
  • The canopic jars were made from such materials as limestone, calicite or alabaster.
  • The heads on the canopic jars represent the 4 sons of Horus

  • Only during the Middle Kingdom did it become customary to place a mask over the face.
